Lung monitor designed to support smoking cessation programs with measurable data.
The Vitalograph Lung Age monitor™ measures FEV1 and compares it with predicted normal values to calculate a smoker or ex-smokers ‘lung age'.
A high lung age in relation to the subject's chronological age can provide a clearer presentation of the negative impact of continued smoking on lung function and encourage smoking cessation.
Identification of a reduction in FEV1 provides an early warning of the damage already suffered by the lungs at the pre-symptomatic stage, when smoking cessation is most effective. Reduced FEV1 is a key indicator of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), often caused by smoking.
Measures FEV1 and displays FEV1 as a % of predicted value.
Displays lung age to help illustrate the impact of smoking on the subject's lungs.
Large, easy to read display.
Electronic record – no need for record cards.
Automatically stores best values in a test session.
Zones indicate level of abnormality.
Quality of blow indicator.
Suitable for use in clinic with Bacterial Viral Filters (BVF™).

What is “Lung Age”?
AddDefined in 1985, lung age refers to the average age of a nonsmoker with a forced expiratory volume at 1 second (FEV1) equal to that of the person being tested.1
The primary purpose was to make spirometry results easier for patients to understand, to demonstrate the premature lung damage suffered as a consequence of smoking.
1. Morris JF, Temple W. Spirometric “lung age” estimation for motivating smoking cessation. Prev Med. 1985;14:655-662.
Has “Lung Age” been validated?
AddA multicenter, RCT study was carried out to evaluate the effect on tobacco quit rates of informing adult smokers of their lung age.2
Smokers aged 35 and older from 5 general practices in England were invited to participate. At 1 year, verified quit rates were 13.6% in the intervention group and 6.4% in the control group (a difference of 7.2%).
2. Parkes G, Greenhalgh T, Griffin M, Dent R. Effect on smoking quit rate of telling patients their lung age: the Step2quit randomized controlled trial. BMJ. 2008;336:598-600.
Can I use a Bacterial Viral Filter (BVF) with the lung age monitor?
AddYes. A BVF is recommended as the lung age monitor is intended for multi-subject use.
What does the quality of blow indicator detect?
Add(!) appears after a blow if a cough is detected in the 1st second.
How do I clean the lung age monitor?
AddIf a new BVF is used for every test subject and the lung age monitor is stored in a clean, dust free environment, then the monitor should require only surface cleaning using a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe. If you suspect that the device flow head has become contaminated, refer to the 4000 Series Cleaning Instructions.
Can the lung age device connect with my phone/tablet?
AddNo. To connect to a supported mobile App, you require the lung monitor BT Smart. For more information, talk to us.
