Chronic cough: Investigations, management, current and future treatments

This state-of-the-art review evaluated chronic cough, covering patient investigations, clinical management, current and future treatment options, and mechanistic concepts underlying the disease. A description of subjective and objective tools to assess chronic cough were described, including the Vitalograph VitaloJAK, which objectively measures cough frequency. The authors noted that objective cough measurement is "the current gold standard to assess the efficacy of novel therapies for refractory or unexplained chronic cough in clinical trial settings, particularly for regulatory approval", adding that the VitaloJAK is the "only medical device with CE marked and 510k approval from the FDA for use in clinical trials".
