Effectiveness of a smoking cessation algorithm integrated into HIV primary care: Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

Disease Areas:
Smoking cessation
Device Types:
BreathCO

This paper described the design of a randomized controlled trial that will examine the effectiveness of a computer-generated smoking cessation algorithm, as compared with an enhanced usual-care cessation program, in adult patients with HIV in primary care. The study will be conducted in 600 patients, with a primary endpoint of biologically confirmed smoking abstinence (ie carbon monoxide-verified smoking cessation at 6 months of follow-up). Expired breath carbon monoxide will be measured using the Vitalograph BreathCO monitor.
