Validation of ACCESS: An automated tool to support self-management of COPD exacerbations

This study examined the validity of automated advice, given via a COPD exacerbation self-management support system known as ACCESS, to contact a healthcare professional in the event of symptom- and event-based exacerbations in patients with COPD. Exacerbation detection was based on 12 YES/NO questions about worsening symptoms, emotions, and bronchodilator use, combined with measurements of SpO2, FEV1, and body temperature. FEV1 was measured using a Vitalograph Asma-1 device.
