Oral montelukast in acute asthma exacerbations: A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial

This randomized, double-blind trial compared the efficacy of montelukast versus placebo in 87 adults hospitalized with acute asthma exacerbation. The primary endpoint was post-bronchodilator PEF measured the morning after hospital admission; secondary endpoints included lung function at discharge (PEF) and at a 4-week clinic visit (PEF, FEV1, FEV1 % predicted, RV, and RV/TLC). Lung function was measured using a Vitalograph handheld spirometer.
