PATS foundational spirometry training in Kenya
Enabling spirometry testing in Kenya through MECOR initiative
The Pan African Thoracic Society (PATS) hosted a comprehensive Foundational Spirometry Training Programme under the American Thoracic Society (ATS) Methods in Epidemiologic and Clinical Operational Research (MECOR) initiative in 2024. The training combined both theoretical and practical aspects, delivered through online sessions and and in-person workshop.
The course was held between 2 August 2024 and 15 September 2024, culminating in a practical spirometry workshop at the Brackenhurst Conference and Retreat Centre, Limuru, Kenya. The programme was attended by 23 students, who engaged in a structured educational experience designed to enhance their spirometry skills for clinical and research applications.
This training was made possible by the sponsorship of Vitalograph, whose support was crucial in providing the necessary resources, equipment, and materials to ensure a successful and impactful learning experience.
The success of the PATS MECOR 2024 Spirometry Training Programme would not have been possible without the involvement and dedication of numerous individuals and organizations:
PATS Faculty and Trainers: For their expert guidance and commitment to nurturing the next generation of spirometry practitioners in Africa.
Participants: The 23 students who showed dedication, engagement, and a passion for improving respiratory care in their respective fields.
Brackenhurst Conference and Retreat Centre: For providing an excellent venue and facilities that enabled a conducive learning environment during the practical sessions.
Vitalograph: Their sponsorship and provision of state-of-the-art spirometry equipment were invaluable in ensuring the hands-on training sessions were effective and well-supported.
And not least… our eager little visitors peeking in to the training room to see what was going on with all the noise and laughter! Well, we know how smart monkeys are, so it makes sense that they too are curious to learn about the workings of their lungs.
