Markers of oxidative stress and toxicant exposure among young waterpipe smokers in the USA

Disease Areas:
Smoking cessation
Device Types:
BreathCO

This study investigated urinary concentrations of biomarkers of DNA oxidative damage (ie 8-oxodG and 8-oxoGuo) and expired carbon monoxide in 30 subjects aged 18–30 years who underwent two counter-balanced, two-hour waterpipe smoking sessions; outcomes with flavored and non-flavored waterpipe tobacco were compared. The concentration of expired carbon monoxide before and after each waterpipe smoking session was measured using a calibrated Vitalograph BreathCO monitor.
