This study examined whether maximum SNIP improved after the tenth sniff in 20 healthy volunteers and 305 patients with various neuromuscular and lung diseases. The authors identified "a persistent learning effect after the tenth sniff", suggesting that >10 sniffs be performed when SNIP is slightly below normal or when SNIP "is used to monitor a decline in inspiratory muscle strength".
