Training program for COPD patients leads to 67% increase in FEV1

Good news from a recent study which showed that inspiration muscle training in hospitalized COPD patients resulted in an average 67% increase in FEV1 with an average of 60% relative increase in FVC. Improved quality of life, SPO2 values, heart rate and a 14.20% relative increase in walking distance in the 6 Minute Walk Test was also reported.

Naik et al recommend that “threshold resistive IMT mode to be used as a part of physiotherapy treatments for treating patients with respiratory conditions especially for COPD”. In this study, lung function parameters such as FEV1, FEV1/FVC were measured using the Vitalograph COPD-6 handheld screener.
