Delivery of high-quality pediatric spirometry in rural communities: A novel use for telemedicine

This study examined the utility of a novel telemedicine model allowing pediatric asthma patients in a rural region of the United States to obtain high-quality spirometry in their local community. Under the supervision of a registered respiratory therapist and using real-time, two-way audiovisual technology, children were coached through a proper spirometry maneuver, with a trained telepresenter providing local assistance as needed. Spirometry measurements were obtained using a calibrated Vitalograph Pneumotrac spirometer.
