This prospective, observational study examined sputum and serum biomarker expression in 145 patients with COPD, with a view to identifying biomarkers associated with clinical phenotypes (particularly those associated with bacteria, viruses, or eosinophilic airway inflammation) during disease exacerbations. During all study visits patients underwent pre- and post-bronchodilator lung function testing using a Vitalograph spirometer.
