Objective assessment of patient inhaler user technique using an audio-based classification approach

Disease Areas:
COPD,Asthma
Device Types:

The purpose of this study was to develop an audio-based signal processing algorithm to objectively assess pMDI user technique, as a means of detecting common critical errors during pMDI use (ie poor actuation coordination and inhaling too fast). The study included 62 patients with asthma and/or COPD, who used a pMDI that incorporated a inhalation training device attached to the mouthpiece, along with an INCA device attached to the back for recording inhaler audio signals. PIF/volume measurements of inhalations were assessed using a Vitalograph Pneumotrac spirometer.
