Estimation of inhalation flow profile using audio-based methods to assess inhaler medication adherence

The purpose of this study was to develop an accurate audio-based flow model to estimate the inhalation flow profile with a DPI. The study included 20 healthy participants who performed 15 inhalations through a placebo DPI connected to a specially designed recording setup that was connected to a Vitalograph Pneumotrac spirometer with Spirotrac software, which allowed for reference measurements of PIF and IC. An audio signal was obtained from an INCA device, which was attached to the DPI.
