Guideline Focused Management of Respiratory Weakness in NMD
Respiratory muscle weakness in patients with neuromuscular disease (NMD) can lead to poor quality of life and high mortality. This webinar will concisely review the most updated guidelines for respiratory management of patients with neuromuscular weakness published by the American College of Chest Physicians. This presentation will address respiratory muscle testing, the benefits of mechanical ventilation, the timing of initiation of ventilation and modes, settings, and place of initiation. It will also review evidence-based recommendations for secretion management and airway clearance of patients with respiratory muscle weakness. Presented by world-renowned pulmonologist, Bernardo J. Selim, M.D.
Objectives
- Describe the use and timing of pulmonary function testing to assist in respiratory management decisions of neuromuscular disease (NMD) patients at risk for respiratory failure.
- Understand the timing of noninvasive ventilation initiation in patients with neuromuscular weakness due to NMD disease.
- Review evidence-based recommendations for secretion management and airway clearance of patients with respiratory muscle weakness.
