Effect of respirable coal mine dust and quartz on lung function parameters of German coalminers: A longitudinal study 1974-2004

Disease Areas:
Occupational health
Device Types:
Wedge Bellows

This longitudinal study examined the nature and magnitude of lung function decline from exposure to coal and quartz in 1352 miners who started working in two underground coal mines in Germany between 1974 and 1979. Lung function testing (FEV1, FVC, FEV1/FVC ratio) was undertaken using various devices; in a majority of patients, this involved the Vitalograph wedge bellows spirometer.
